Step into the Divaville Lounge on Sunday, November 22 as we celebrate the 110th birthday of Hoagy Carmichael! One of the more jazz-oriented composers in the 1930s, Carmichael wrote hundreds of of songs including classics like "Stardust," "Georgia On My Mind" and "Up the Lazy River." Sometimes called the first singer-songwriter, Carmichael was a talented pianist and singer. We will hear his greatest songs performed by Carmichael himself and by Divaville Lounge Favorites. We'll also hear rare early recordings, and clips from Carmichael's Hollywood acting career. Tune in for an afternoon of "Stardust Melodies"!
Original Lyrics to "Stardust", written by Hoagy Carmichael:
Stardust melody, you hold a charm
Through the lonely years;
Stardust strain, beautiful refrain
I hear you ringing in my ears.
But the world goes by, paying no attention to you;
To me you're everything in life and love
I know, 'deed it's so;
(vocal 'doodling' for eight bars)
Oh, Stardust strain, in my heart you will remain,
Stardust melody, I love you heart and soul I do-o-o
'Deed I do
Final Lyrics to "Stardust," written by Mitchell Parish:
And now the purple dusk of twilight time
Steals across the meadows of my heart
High up in the sky the little stars climb
Always reminding me that we're apart
You wander down the lane and far away
Leaving me a song that will not die
Love is now the stardust of yesterday
The music of the years gone by
Sometimes I wonder why I spend
The lonely night dreaming of a song
The melody haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
When our love was new
And each kiss an inspiration
But that was long ago
Now my consolation
Is in the stardust of a song
Beside a garden wall
When stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nightingale tells his fairy tale
of paradise where roses grew
Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain
My stardust melody
The memory of love's refrain
