Step into the Divaville Lounge on Sunday, November 29 as we honor composer Billy Strayhorn! Strayhorn worked for decades with Duke Ellington, and during their collaboration wrote some of Ellington's most iconic works, like "Take the 'A' Train," "Satin Doll," "Lush Life" and "Chelsea Bridge." Strayhorn developed his love of music right here in Hillsborough North Carolina, where he spent much of his childhood.
Often called an "invisible genius," Billy Strayhorn never sought the limelight and spent most of his career in Ellington's shadow. Ellington described Strayhorn as "my right arm, my left arm, all the eyes in the back of my head, my brain waves in his head, and his in mine." One of the more jazz-oriented composers in Tin Pan Alley, Carmichael wrote hundreds of of songs including classics like "Stardust," "Georgia On My Mind" and "Up the Lazy River." Carmichael was also a talented pianist and singer, and we'll hear him performing his greatest songs. And we'll hear clips from Carmichael's acting career. Born on June 28, 1902, Rodgers is one of only two people to have won an Oscar, a Grammy, an Emmy, a Tony, and a Pulitzer Prize. Richard Rodgers was part of two of America's best loved songwriting teams: Rodgers and Hart, and Rodgers and Hammerstein. We'll hear classic songs from both partnerships, performed by Divaville Lounge favorites and by Rodgers himself. Tune in for this tribute to Richard Rodgers; we'll be dancing on the ceiling!

Singer, actor, radio and television host, with three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Der Bingle was an icon of the twentieth century and the model for all male vocalists who followed him. We'll hear from Bing's earliest recordings with the Paul Whiteman orchestra, his rise to stardom as the ultimate crooner, his comic turn in the Road To movies with Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour, his popular radio program, his work in Hollywood, and his immense contribution to the war effort. We'll start with one of the earliest recordings of Irving Berlin's classic "Alexander's Ragtime Band" and work our way through ragtime, hot jazz, sweet jazz, crooners, big band, swing, bossa nova and more. Arguably the most important American musician of the 20th century, Armstrong's influence on jazz is hard to measure. We'll learn about the revolutionary New Orleans jazz scene which Armstrong helped create, hear some of his earliest work on cornet with King Oliver and with the Hot Fives, and play favorites from Armstrong's many years of superstardom.
